The short answer is no! Contrary to common belief, higher thread count does not equal higher quality sheets. A better-quality fiber with a lower thread count will feel softer and stand up to washing better than a lower-quality fiber with a higher thread count. The thread count metric has been hyped as a type of gimmick by manufacturers to be able to sell low quality products for higher prices.
We’ve been trained to associate high count numbers with luxury - after all, we need some way to measure quality. But if you run this logic by any textile expert, you’ll be met with adverse information, as this assumption is incorrect. As linen expert Julian Tomchin told The New York Times, “once you get beyond 400 threads per square inch, be suspicious.”

By definition, thread count is simple - it's the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric, by adding the verticals (called the “warp”) to the horizontals (the “filling”). But in reality, some manufacturers aren’t that straightforward. Think about it - only so many pieces of thread can fit into this set amount of space. It turns out that this means the number for a good thread count is between 300 and 400, depending on breathability and other performance goals. That means if you see sheet sets touting 600, 800 or 1000 thread count, the manufacturer has employed a deceivingly creative method to reach that number in a ploy to be able to raise the price!
There are many factors that go into what produces a quality sheet product, and thread count is only a small portion of the equation. Fabric content, fiber quality and finish are the big ones. Here at SONU, we’re proud to bring you top quality materials by paying close attention to the factors that actually matter when it comes to our custom sheets. After thorough testing of sheet materials in conjunction with our SONU Sleep System mattress, we’ve determined the best performance with our 300 thread count long staple cotton. Any higher thread count would diminish our ideal breathability and performance goals.
We’ve found the sweet spot with our top quality 100% cotton fabric for its heat wicking, breathability, durability and high level of softness - available in three colors to suit different decors and personal preferences. Please visit the
